Are your teens spending too much time in front of their screen? Do they lack the motivation to get outside, get active and get fit?
Here are our top 5 tips to get your teen exercising again.
1. Make it their choice
You may find your teenager questioning 'what's in it for me?' and this is perfectly natural, as adults we do it all the time in every walk of life. Try to help them make the connection between getting active and their own needs and desires whether that is body shape, weight management or new friends . Once this is achieved you shouldn't have any issue with motivation. Secondly, it will help them stay in the game. They will enjoy the feeling of well-being, reduced stress, and increased strength and energy they get from exercise.
2. Develop a habit
Help your teen stay active by finding an exercise regimen that fits with their schedule. Your teen may not have time to play a team sport at school or in a local league, but many gyms offer teen memberships, and kids might be able to squeeze in a visit before or after school. Many also experience negative emotions towards team sports as competition increases amongst peers and anxiety about skill levels and abilities kick in. HBF Stadium offers a teen membership for 12 - 15 year olds that want to work out in a gym environment, participate in group fitness and develop their strength and abilities.
3. Make screen time count
Lets face it, the screen isn't going anywhere! Build in exercise challenges while they watch TV or play games. Be a role model! If they see you hit the ground for some push ups, they may just join you.
4. Make it enjoyable
Most people whether teenager or adult are motivated to do something fun rather than boring. Fun is therefore a key ingredient in getting kids active and motivated. Being part of new social networks can also be a great way to make the exercise routine more enjoyable. Exercising regularly with the same people and establishing a relationship with instructors can make your teenager feel worthwhile and accountable.
5. Be part of a community
There are many ways to develop a community. Get involved in this journey as a family. Offer to join them if you can in a gym membership or class. Join a regular group fitness class that you enjoy together. Did you know you are 70% more likely to maintain your fitness routine if you participate in a group fitness scenario. HBF Stadium offers teen membership options so kids and parents can go to the gym together.
