  • New lighting poles turned on ahead of West Perth’s first home game of the WAFL season
  • Cook Government invests $1.9 million in lighting at prominent WAFL ground in Joondalup

West Perth Football Club will play their first home game of the 2024 season under brand new lighting thanks to a $1.9 million investment by the Cook Government.

Four new lighting towers were lifted into position in March before the headframes and luminaries were added, giving the oval at HBF Arena in Joondalup over 500 lux. This allows for the ability to host night fixtures, enhancing the sporting experience for both fans and players.

The improved lighting also enables the clubs and all associated age grades that use the space to use the facilities after dark, easing fixturing challenges.

Joe McCarthy, CEO of the 130 year old West Perth Football Club said that “West Perth continues to build its legacy working alongside VenuesWest. The new light towers stand strong and create a night environment that sets us apart from all other clubs. It is a huge step forward for our club and we are appreciative of VenuesWest and the investment they provide into the facility.”

In December 2022, the Cook Government approved the replacement of the towers with four new light poles with a 10 years life cycle. The design and procurement of the project was accelerated by VenuesWest to ensure the lights could be commissioned before the WAFL season opener. VenuesWest CEO David Etherton commented that “these new lights provide a great opportunity for the West Perth Football Club to host exciting nighttime fixtures” and that VenuesWest will “continue to work with our key partners such as West Perth to support high performance sport and deliver world class experiences.”

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“Last year HBF Arena welcomed over 1.4 million visitors, these upgrades to the West Perth Football Club help ensure a high quality experience for these visitors.

The ability to host high quality nighttime matches will also provide an avenue for increased patronage at the venue.”
