The Honourable Colin Barnett MLA, Premier of Western Australia firing the starting gun for 100 metre race to officially open the WA Athletics Stadium on the 26th of May capped off a year that has seen the growth phase commence that will see the VenuesWest portfolio of assets grow from $167 million to nearly $800 million in the next couple of years.

As the cream of WA’s female sprinters hurtled down the track the paint was still drying on parts of the magnificent new stadium.

The combined $73.4 million WA Athletics Stadium and State Basketball Centre, (completion late 2009) and the $483 million Perth Arena project (completion 2011) are now part of the VenuesWest portfolio with Challenge Stadium, Arena Joondalup, the Midvale Speeddome and Perth Motorplex.

The WA Sport Centre Trust adopted the trading name VenuesWest in April 2009 and had a very successful and memorable year.

Despite the economic conditions the organisation, which is operationally nearly 80% self funded, ended the year ahead of budget.

This was a great way to show that VenuesWest has the skills, drive and experience for the raft of new venues in Western Australia, according to Chairman Graham Partridge. “Despite the tough environment the results have been a indication of hard work, creative thinking, commitment and good management,” Mr Partridge said.

Most importantly more West Australians used our venues more than ever before and we retained an exceptionally high customer satisfaction rating. 2008/2009 Highlights include:

Arena Joondalup

  • 913 570 visits for the year
  • 7% customer satisfaction rating
  • 110 functions
  • 56 events

Challenge Stadium

  • 958 232 visits for the year
  • 2% customer satisfaction rating
  • 757 functions
  • 97 events
  • 24 banquets

Speeddome

  • 24,497 visits for the year
  • 7% customer satisfaction rating
  • 27 events

Kwinana Motorplex

  • 275,283 visits for the year
  • 92 events

“VenuesWest is determined to be Western Australia’s provider of premier sports, recreation and entertainment venues,” Mr Partridge said.

“The 2008/2009 financial year was, we hope, proof of our capability to achieve that goal.”

As we prepare to launch the State Basketball Centre in December, VenuesWest has begun a new era of service for sport, recreation and entertainment venues.
