One woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner according to frightening statistics prompting VenuesWest to show its support to the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence campaign.

The campaign, which commenced Sunday 25 November on the International Day for elimination of Violence against Women, will run for 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence.

As part of this campaign, Women’s Council for Domestic and Family Violence with the help of VenuesWest is calling on everyone to take action to stop the increase in domestic violence in our community by raising awareness about violence against women and its impact on a woman’s physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being.

Further alarming statistics taken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2017 show one in four women have experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner since the age of 15 and one in five women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15. It is not just women who experience violence with one in five men experiencing at least one incident of violence from a current or former partner since the age of 15.

VenuesWest CEO David Etherton says these statistics are incredibly disturbing and as such we want to show our support of the campaign through our iconic venues including Optus Stadium.

“We are taking several steps internally to encourage our staff to talk to their colleagues, friends and family about this very real issue in which according to the statistics over 60 percent of women experiencing violence from a current partner are working.”

“To raise awareness to the wider community we are undertaking several initiatives including lighting up Optus Stadium and RAC Arena.”

“I encourage everyone to come together to talk about gender violence and not only learn from each other but to speak out if you believe someone is being affected by the devastating impact of gender violence.”
