Not since the 1998 World Swimming Championships and XII FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in 2008 has HBF Stadium (formerly Challenge Stadium) seen such a high number of attendees visit an event until now.
On Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November, HBF Stadium was alive with nearly 19,000 enthusiastic children and eager parents excited to see The Wiggles, with the popular children’s act performing five live shows over both days.
In 1998 the World Swimming Championships held at HBF Stadium saw approximately 140,000 visitors over the nine day event, an average daily rate of 15,500 visitors. In 2008, the XII FINA World Masters Swimming Championships saw a total of 25,386 visitors attend over eight days.
As well as The Wiggles, the venue was alive with visitors participating in the Swimming WA Club Sprint Championships and regular venue programs including Swim School and Gymnastics. In total, HBF Stadium was host to more than 20,000 visitors over the weekend.
The entire VenuesWest Mt Claremont precinct was booming as the WA Athletics Stadium hosted young participants for the Joondalup Little Athletics Shield event and the WA Basketball Centre delivered two full days of Basketball State Championships taking the total of visitors within the precinct to more than 25,000 visitors.
VenuesWest Chairman Graham Partridge OAM said these numbers are a strong indicator that both promoters and visitors see our venues as the go-to venues in Western Australia for sporting, entertainment and recreation events.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to have one of the world’s most popular children’s acts perform at one of our oldest and most iconic venues,” said Mr Partridge
“It makes everything we do at VenuesWest worthwhile when we have the opportunity to see children and their families having a great time and creating wonderful long lasting memories at our venues,” Mr Partridge said.
Many visitors who attended the event said they were excited to share such a special moment with their children or grandchildren at a venue that catered to such a popular event.
The Wiggles attendee Carol Richardson said “it was a great event that was very well organised by the team at VenuesWest. In particular the staff were very helpful and friendly. There are not many venues in Perth that could cater to so many people.”
Mr Partridge said revenue generated from the use of venues is used to directly support high performance sport and deliver benefits for local community and sporting groups.
“Attracting visitors and promoters to our venues allows us to continue to bring popular entertainment acts to the Western Australian community and ensure that opportunities to enjoy and share incredible memories are delivered for people today and well into the future,” Mr Partidge said.
VenuesWest is Western Australia’s provider of premier sports, recreation and entertainment venues and its portfolio includes the new and world class Perth Arena and the redeveloped nib Stadium. Recently the State Government confirmed that the new Perth Stadium would join the VenuesWest portfolio when completed in 2018.
These are in addition to HBF Stadium, HBF Arena, WA Athletics Stadium, WA Basketball Centre, Midvale Speeddome, Perth Motorplex, Champion Lakes Regatta Centre and the WA Rugby Centre, with the State Netball Centre and the Western Australian Institute of Sports High Performance Service Centre under construction currently.
