Today the State Netball Centre officially celebrates its first birthday.
A $26 million state of the art, world class high performance venue, the State Netball Centre was opened by Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett in March of last year.
In total, 68,000 patrons have passed through the doors, with more than 4,600 hours of on court usage in the first 12 months.
The Centre provided West Coast Fever with a dedicated full time training base for the first time in the club’s history, and played a significant role in the team’s run to their maiden ANZ Championship finals series in 2015.
Not only has the Centre given Fever a place to call home; it has also provided a training and competition environment that has made an immediate contribution to the development of state competitions, in particular the Smarter than Smoking West Australian Netball League.
Furthermore, it has helped Netball WA grow and expand its capacity from the grassroots, such as ANZ NetSetGO and the No Limits program, through to the elite level State teams and high performance programs.
It is a venue WA should be extremely proud of according to Premier Colin Barnett.
“The State Netball Centre is a precinct for grassroots games played alongside the elite participants, and all levels in between,” Premier Barnett said.
Highlights in the State Netball Centre’s inaugural year of operation included hosting the Australian Diamonds and New Zealand Silverferns in preparation for the Constellation Cup Test Match last October, as well as the Australian Netball League, Smarter than Smoking Association Championships and the NAIDOC Netball carnival.
Netball WA CEO Simon Taylor believes the Centre’s significance cannot be understated.
“A state of the art, dedicated high performance facility for our sport, and a true home for netball, the impact of the State Netball Centre on our community is immense,” Taylor said.
“Most importantly though, the State Netball Centre is a tangible representation of how far our sport has come in recent years, and puts us squarely on the sporting map of WA.”
Netball WA would like to thank the Western Australian Government for their support in building the State Netball Centre, and their guidance during this initial year of operation through the Department of Sport and Recreation and VenuesWest.
