Approximately 2500 tonnes of steel roof was lifted to the top of Perth Arena on Friday 14 May
That is the equivalent of around six fully laden and fuelled jumbo jets. The complete lift was 23 metres in height and represented a major step in the construction of WA’s world class 14,000 seat arena for premium entertainment and sporting events.
“It is a significant engineering achievement as the soccer pitch-sized roof is an uncommonly large lift for Perth,” according to VenuesWest Chairman Graham Partridge.
“Putting the retractable roof in place is one of the milestones of this project and shows the venue is now really taking shape,” he said. “From now, Perth people are really going to start seeing more and more of what the finished building will look like. The raising of the roof is a significant step towards completion.”
Consulting engineers on the roof lift are international company Aurecon, who have provided structural, facade, fire safety, vertical transportation and retractable roof mechanical systems services.
Aurecon Region Leader WA, Don Phillips, said the company was delighted to be part of the team delivering this iconic project. “The jacking up of the main retractable roof over the Arena is an important milestone on this project.
“In responding to the technical challenges posed in the design of this unique structure and to develop an efficient structure for the retractable roof, we have drawn on the knowledge and skill of our people involved and Aurecon's experience obtained from the design of other stadium projects such as the new Wembley Stadium, Melbourne Cricket Ground Grandstands, and Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.
“In addition, collaboration between all stakeholders, including the structural engineer, architect, and builder has contributed to the success so far in reaching this key milestone on Perth Arena."
The Perth Arena will provide Western Australia with facilities to a standard that has not been seen before in this State because of the technology, the fit-out and the design.
VenuesWest’s Perth Arena team is working to deliver a state-of-the-art facility that gets people talking. The bold and colourful designs of both the exterior and interior show the flair and originality of a showcase venue for Perth.
Mr Partridge said he would like to acknowledge the construction and design teams for their efforts in making this landmark building a reality and getting it to the point of having a roof in place.
