Elite West Australian athletes joined Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron for the first look inside the WA Institute of Sport High Performance Service Centre at Mount Claremont today.
- Roof and walls go up at new WAIS High Performance Service Centre
- $33.7million state-of-the art facility on target to open early next year
Construction of the centre is gathering pace, with the roof, external walls and ground and internal works nearing completion.
“Just a few months ago, we were here watching the slab being poured,” Mr Waldron said.
“Since then it’s very exciting to see the building taking shape right before our eyes - the vision for a world-class training facility for Western Australia’s emerging and elite athletes is close to becoming a reality.”
Inspecting the facility this morning, WA athletes Kim Mickle (javelin) and Katherine Downie (swimming) said they couldn’t wait to move in, as they set their minds towards Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
The high performance centre, being delivered by the Department of Sport and Recreation, will be owned by VenuesWest on behalf of the State Government.
It features training facilities unrivalled in Australia and the latest technology in sports science and recovery including state-of-the-art testing facilities, hydrotherapy and recovery pools, physiological laboratories and an indoor running track.
The pools are currently being tiled and work continues on the office area. In late November, the surface for the indoor running track will be laid.
WAIS works with more than 250 athletes in 11 dedicated sporting programs such as cycling, swimming, gymnastics, field events, hockey and kayaking as well as a host of individual athletes from sports outside WAIS. The institute is also home to national training programs for pole vault and javelin.
It is anticipated that the project will be completed in early 2015, with a staged handover to enable training areas to be used in late 2014.
- Main construction contract for WAIS High Performance Service Centre was awarded in October last year
- VenuesWest will lease the High Performance Service Centre to WAIS
