Reigning netball world champions the Australian Diamonds will take on New Zealand Silver Ferns in the deciding match of the Constellation Cup at Perth Arena tonight.

  • World netball champions play New Zealand at Perth Arena in deciding match of the Constellation Cup
  • First international test to be played in Perth since 2011
  • Proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism WA

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the game was the first international test match to be played in Perth since 2011, and the first at Perth Arena.

“New Zealand is Australia’s traditional netball rival and this match promises to be a tough challenge for the Diamonds who narrowly defeated the Silver Ferns to win the Netball World Cup in August,” Dr Hames said

“The State Government, through Tourism Western Australia, is proud to support this event as it will give local fans the chance to see their heroes in action, and will provide great exposure for WA in New Zealand, which is one of our biggest visitor markets.

“There is great rivalry between Australia and New Zealand when it comes to sport, whether it is cricket, rugby or netball, so it’s great to have such a high profile match feature at the Perth Arena tonight - the decider of the Constellation Cup.”

The test will be broadcast on Network Ten’s ONE and FOX SPORTS, as well as SKY Sport in New Zealand, and streamed live on the Netball Live app for mobile and tablet.

New Zealand is WA’s third biggest market in terms of visitor numbers with 79,200 people visiting the State last financial year, injecting more than $147 million into the local economy.

The Minister said major international events were vital for the State’s economy and formed an important part of the State Government’s strategy to see the value of tourism grow to $12 billion by 2020.

“Tourism is important for WA, with the industry generating more than 94,000 jobs and contributing $8.7 billion to the economy though visitor spend and we want to see it grow further,” he said.

“World-class events will play an important role in achieving the Government’s goal to see visitor spend reach $12 billion by 2020 by helping to attract visitors and generating media exposure for the State.”
