The opening of the WA Athletics Stadium in July 2009 saw the beginning of a new era of athletics in Western Australia. Built to replace the ageing facilities at Perry Lakes Stadium, WAAS was designed by Cox Architects to international standards and features:
  • Design to take advantage of weather (wind) direction for athletes, with capability of running sprint events on front and/or back straight
  • Nine lane 400 metre Mondo athletics track
  • Two 12 lane 110 metre sprint straights (front and back)
  • Photofinish room, officials room, post event control room, drug testing room, physiotherapy room and first aid room
  • Fred Napier function room
  • Athletics WA offices
  • Grandstand for 2000 spectators and grass bank seating for 8000
  • Two kiosk / food services areas
  • Fully electronic timing equipment
  • Floodlighting for night events
  • 12 change room / toilets

WA Athletics Stadium accommodates track and field disciplines including discuss, pole vault and steeplechase, as well as soccer and rugby. It hosts international, national, state and local athletics meets for both senior and junior levels, school athletics carnivals, training sessions and a variety of functions and events.
